At Home: Black Walls Interiors

Last November, we decided to give the bathroom a much-needed makeover from head to toe. Whilst we headed into the festive period with beautiful new floor and wall tiles, I will admit doing this during the silly season was a mistake. The upheaval of having workmen in the house whilst working from home, during the busiest part of the year, was a mighty pain in the derrière, in time and pennies spent. I made a promise not to plan any stressful home projects in the final months of the year ever again; and instead to keep interior projects simple, affordable and realistic.

After a year of completing small projects around the home and noticing a big impact (we sorted our patio area, added new furniture to bedroom/lounge, painted, and fixed stuff), I decided to do a simple DIY last weekend that I’d been putting off for a while. I painted the office.

I’ve lived and worked in the office for a few years now, with a painted black feature wall, and it’s never once felt dark and dingy; it is warm, calming and more importantly, it just felt like ‘me’.

The other walls in the office are white, but the wall opposite the black wall where my desk lives just looked a little tired. We have a lovely retro teak sideboard which had become a dumping ground for files and stuff (you know how it is), and I felt that needed some love too. So when Exclusive Mirrors offered me a mirror to update a space in my home, I knew exactly where it would live.

I chose this stunning industrial style mirror, in a round gold metal frame, and immediately knew it would work against a moody hue, as would the teak sideboard. Naturally, I headed to Pinterest to make sure my hunch was right, and found lots of dark wall interior inspiration, with beautiful teal sideboards sitting pretty.

The space just feels more put-together now, and a place that feels relaxing to work in too. To avoid the sideboard becoming another surface to dump things on, it’s going to become a home for plants instead. I’ve made a small start already, with the addition of a new Monstera plant and some succulents too, but there’s plenty of space now for our plant collection to grow.

I think it’s important to take time with your home before making any rash decor decisions, so my only decor tip when trying bold colours like this, is to try on one wall first before painting an entire space (if that’s your plan). Take your time, and all that jazz.

A year on from our bathroom makeover, I’m happy simple projects like this can make a big difference too. One statement mirror, a bold painted wall and some plants later, and I’m super pleased with my office update. It took one day! No stressy times involved.
