Walk & Eat: Fruit Scones

I haven’t featured a Walk + Eat recipe on the blog for a while, due to us having a half broken oven. The joys of home ownership, eh? There seemed no point in attempting to bake until we sorted a new one. Months later, putting off things like we usually do, AO.com sent a timely email to review their Stoves Electric Double Oven*, and I’ve not stopped cooking (and gazing on its cleanliness in awe) ever since; just in time to enjoy the capers of Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig, and The Great British Bake Off.

My Walk + Eat recipes are usually easy snacks that you take out with you during your hiking adventures, but scones are best served warm in my opinion, so these are more for that post-exercise ‘I will eat what I want’ mood (with a good helping of jam and clotted cream of course).

I know everyone knows how to make scones, but I love a simple and homely bake. I remember one of the first recipes I made in secondary school’s Home Education class was a very dense batch of the cheese variety, that my parents subsequently threw in the bin I imagine. I promise, I’ve learnt a thing or two since then, notably not to overwork the dough.

Without sounding overtly twee, I rustled up this batch (making 12 scones, using a 6 inch cutter) to accompany my homemade blackberry jam (I’ll whack the recipe for that on the blog too). Together, served with a large pot of tea, they make the perfect seasonal comfort food after a couple of hours spent outdoors.

As for our newly fitted Stoves oven, I am really impressed with the product, as well as the service. I didn’t realise that AO can fit appliances as well as recycle your old ones too (there’s a service fee for both, which you can book at the time of purchasing your product ), which makes the whole experience stress free, convenient and easy. It’s got me thinking about our dodgy fitted fridge next!

The double oven itself ticks so many boxes for us. Our kitchen is open plan so we needed an oven that was quiet whilst we we ‘lounge it up’ in the living area. I’ve had to double check the oven (and our apple crumble) was actually on over the past week, whilst watching copious episodes of the Peaky Blinders. It’s very quiet. It cooks things quicker, which obviously means its more efficient than our last. Plus there are useful settings like the pizza, quick bake, slow cook and keep warm function that I know we’ll use a lot.

Finally, I love that it has a glass door on the bottom oven so I can check the cooking process, and it’s removable for easy cleaning too. I pinky promise AO, I will clean it more than once a year (I know, I’m an utter disgrace).

What have you been baking lately?

P.S it’s pronounced skon, right?
