10 Ideas for October Half Term

With October Half Term coming up I thought I’d write a list of things to do this holiday to help you embrace autumn with the kids, your OH or friends and family.

Seasons come and go, but autumn surprises me every single time with it’s beauty, magic and general awesomeness. It’s the perfect season to still enjoy the outdoors, without completely freezing your fingertips off, but there’s also lots of fun to be had indoors too (hello open fires and great books). Here’s just a few suggestions for all the family to enjoy…

1 | Have a Halloween crafternoon. Whether you’re looking for ideas to keep the children entertained this October Half Term or are feeling crafty yourself, try a creative afternoon making decorations for Halloween. I love these non-carve pumpkins made by Amy of Homey Oh My!

2 | Start thinking about your resolutions and goals for next year, then make a head start. Feel too early? Then look back at January’s goals. It’s never too late to begin something you started.

3 | Make the most of your holidays and explore our brilliant UK cities. Keep an eye out for Christmas lights switch on dates, festive markets and A/W exhibitions. If, like me, you’re a fan of London in autumn why not get free printable vouchers and plan an affordable day trip to see attractions including See London By Night, Shakespeare’s Globe Tour and Thames Afternoon Tea Cruise.

4 | Watch a Live Theatre Broadcast at your local cinema. I mentioned these in my last post but I can’t recommend them enough. If you don’t live in London, going to see the latest theatre, opera and ballet can be an expensive night out. Instead if you watch them streamed live at your local cinema you are still supporting theatre companies, plus you get the best seats in the house. There’s some great shows coming up from NT Live, Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company and the Royal Opera House. Simply check your local cinema for details!

5 | Go on a woodland walk and forage for berries, leaves, kindling and general autumn awesomeness. Bring a basket, a picnic and lots of hot chocolate. You can use some of your finds for your crafternoon (maybe make an autumnal wreath or garland?).

6 | Pop to the library or your local book store and pick up books for autumn and winter.

7 | Take a trip to the seaside. Beaches are the perfect place for all the family to enjoy; they’re free and you can also enjoy rockpooling, beachcombing and paddling (followed by a brisk walk and hearty pub lunch). Perfect. My favourite coasts include Bamburgh beach in Northumberland, Woolacombe Bay in Devon and Sandsend in Whitby.

8 | After a busy day on the coast, finish your evening with a night in. Bake Gingerbread Men or Parkin, light a fire (using your foraged kindling) and toast marshmallows. If you’re feeling brave (it is getting cold now!) pop outside and do some stargazing.

Classics

9 | Decorate. Aim small and give one room in your home a makeover. Whether that means painting a few walls, updating the textiles (think curtains, cushions or rugs) or staying simple by moving your furniture around.

10 | Go pumpkin picking. I have an urge to go to a big field and pick a pumpkin this season, while wearing wellies and my favourite winter knits. Someone point me in the right direction!

What plans do you have this October Half Term?
