At Home: 8 ways to bring the outdoors inside

I’m a tad obsessed with plants and flowers. If I take a wander into town I will return with a small bunch of flowers to fill a jam jar or a cheery succulent or two. This is my little way of incorporating nature into my surroundings which, I’ve been told, can help with stress and tension, as well as being the simplest way to brighten a home. Whether you live in a little house (like us) or an open plan dream home, in the city or countryside, here are a few simple ideas to bring the outdoors inside.

  • Make seasonal garlands or wreaths using leaves, twigs and flowers that you find outside. This will also make a good project for the kids!
  • Brighten empty corners with plants, plants and more plants. Succulents are ideal house plants as they take little looking after and will sit happily on a windowsill looking pretty.
  • Use furniture and accessories made from natural materials, patterns and textiles. Rattan, wicker and rich woods will all add warmth to any room as well as linen and organic cottons.
  • If you own your own home and have the space, why not go all out and include Bi-Folding Doors to add another usable room to your house. My OH’s mum has something similar in Australia and they are amazing! One day, my friends.
  • Take photographs of the great outdoors and add them to your walls. I adore pictures of seascapes and water.
  • Use colour inspired from the outdoors to decorate your space. Then add a contrasting bold and graphic print (a rug or curtains) to make the whole room look and feel contemporary.
  • Go branch hunting! A few simple fallen branches either left alone in a vase or decorated can add height and be a great centrepiece to a room, wall or mantelpiece. Plus they are free! I especially love this Fabric Leaf Tree DIY via Two Girls Being Crafty.
  • Make a windowsill herb garden. It will also encourage you to spend time relaxing in natural light.

Do you have any tips to bring the outdoors in?

My herb garden died as it was too sunny on the windowsill but I have got plans to get more succulents to try and cheer things up at home. I used to have a Christmas cactus too which I loved as by leaving it in the bathroom it got enough water from the steam and it flowered twice a year!

Hmm. Might go and buy some flowers today but it is so hard to get British seasonal flowers in the shops!
